Miyajima

The main shrine at Miyajima, Itsukushima Jinja, was founded in 592 on a spot calculated to be most affected by the tides. The illusion of the main shrine and torii floating at high tide is most realistic. The present torii was built in 1875, the seventh since the Heian period. Itsukushima, remodeled into its present grandeur in 1168 by Taira-no-Kiyomori, is dedicated to three sea goddesses who dwell there.Only the priests may enter the inner shrine. An ancient religious rule forbade birth and death on theisland, and no record had ever reported that it has been broken at any time through the centuries. Pregnant women were ferried to the mainland, as well as the gravely infirm and their soon-to-bemourners, who underwent a 50 day purification at Ono on the opposite shore before returning.
