There were two different programs of this name. The first was a 15-minute daily serial drama based on stories written by Clarence Budington Kelland, and told the story of the owner of a small-town hardware store. Scattergood was a kindly homespun philosopher type who had raised an adopted son, Jimmy, from infancy. The boy's mother, Mrs. Dodie Black, then appeared and tried to get custody of the child. Scattergood was played by Jess Pugh, his helper Hippocrates Brown by John Hearne, Jimmy by Charles Grant and Mrs. Black by Eileen Palmer. After appearing on CBS from 1938-1942, the program returned on Mutual in 1949 as a 30-minure situation comedy with Wendell Holmes in the title role. The announcers were George Walsh, Roger Krupp and bob Emerick. Music was by Ben Ludlow.
